How to plan an accident

Crash Test Dummy Managing Software

Managing dummies is not for dummies

Managing a crash test dummy lab is no easy task. In fact, the technical term for a dummy is an “Anthropometric Test Device (ATD)”, which is a highly sophisticated measurement device packed with complex sensors that need regular calibration. The ATD lab manager must select the most appropriate ATDs for upcoming tests and ensure that they are ready for use and functioning properly. Regular certification tests must be performed on the ATDs to ensure that they are ready for use. You must keep track of upcoming crash tests and certification processes and monitor the condition and availability of the ATDs. If ATDs are not properly certified or are too badly damaged, tests must be repeated, which represents a huge cost risk.

The Solution

Based on interviews and user validation, we developed an innovative concept prototype for Humanetics to efficiently manage crash test ATDs, ensuring that you always have a clear overview of upcoming tests and the status of the ATDs.

Streamlined and powerful

A ATD lab manager has to keep track of a vast amount of information. That's why we focused on presenting the most important data at a glance. Each ATD is represented by an individual card displaying key details. A search bar and calendar function simplify organization. The highlight: interactive 3D models of the ATDs! More on that below.

Key data at a glance

For better clarity, we have designed a kind of index card system. Each card provides quick access to the three most important values for each ATD:

  • Remaining usage count
  • Time since last certification
  • Time since last sensor calibration

Rate your ATD

ATDs can be assigned an overall condition rating. This provides insights into quality aspects that are not covered by the three main values, such as the condition of the skin.

Overview in 3D

A 3D model visualizes potential damage on the ATD or deviations in measurement values. Individual components can be assessed based on their condition, with affected areas highlighted in different color gradients. This provides an instant overview of which parts are impacted and the severity of the damage. The model can be freely rotated and zoomed for a detailed inspection.

Predict material fatigue and reduce costs

A special feature is a timeline that allows for comparing the results of past certification tests over time. These tests are standardized, meaning the results must fall within a specific range. By tracking material fatigue from test to test, it becomes possible to predict when a ATD is likely to fail an upcoming certification without component maintenance. This allows for timely repairs or replacements, ultimately saving time and costs.
