Challenge: UX evaluation on a new technical basis

DG Nexolution migrated the cooperative online shop GenoBuy to a new technical platform—including the integration of numerous new functions and components, mostly from the Shopware ecosystem. In this context, it was crucial to check whether the existing user guidance, the interaction of new features, and central usage scenarios still met the requirements of the different user roles. Centigrade was commissioned to identify potential problems through targeted user research and comprehensive usability tests, thereby laying the foundation for a user-friendly platform. In addition, we conducted a UX audit in which we systematically analyzed the platform to uncover usability and UX weaknesses from a professional perspective.

User Research

We conducted 15 in-depth interviews with users to gain a comprehensive understanding of the different user roles and their challenges. The insights gained were essential for conducting the subsequent usability tests.

Usability Testing

Over a period of five months, we conducted 23 usability tests in three rounds. Participants from various user roles were invited to perform typical tasks in a test environment, providing us with precise insights into user interaction. The results were continuously reported back to DG Nexolution and discussed in presentations.

Handover to development

The results from user research and usability testing were compiled into a structured summary with clearly prioritized recommendations for action. This ensured that the users' perspective was retained in the technical implementation and served as a guiding principle throughout the further development process. This formed the basis for the next project phase: implementation by the internal development team at DG Nexolution.

From user research to user-centered design

Our usability tests identified clear weaknesses in the user interface as well as missing functions that are essential for smooth operation. These findings helped to focus the further development process on the most important areas for optimization.

The direct involvement of end users in the analysis and evaluation phase ensured that their perspectives were taken seriously and valued. This was an important basis for tailoring the platform precisely to actual needs in the future.

Regular presentations and the transfer of raw data and evaluation files ensured transparent communication with DG Nexolution and enabled informed decisions to be made throughout the project.

UX Audit: Heuristic analysis for specific optimization

In addition to the usability test, we conducted a comprehensive UX audit for GenoBuy. In doing so, we thoroughly re-examined the interaction of the entire system after the move to the new platform. The findings from the previous usability tests were also incorporated into the evaluation. The aim of the audit was to identify existing weaknesses in the user experience and usability of the product through a heuristic evaluation. In the audit, we worked with DG Nexolution to define key usage scenarios and systematically test them in a cognitive walkthrough – such as article search, article customization, orders, and approvals. Two UX researchers analyzed which usability heuristics had been violated. Problems with consistency, navigation, and visibility of the system status occurred particularly frequently. Our recommendations: introduce clear standards and guidelines, permanently visible navigation, better prioritization of functions, and optimized use of space. DG Nexolution received a detailed report documenting all identified problems and specific recommendations for action. The results provided DG Nexolution with a sound basis for further developing the UX of GenoBuy in a targeted manner.
